Pretty much sums it up.

Dammit.

Tis thread is getting no interest - maybe if it had been named something more like " The World Cup Thread" ?

Such interesting happenings - France getting dumped in the preliminaries with only a point? England turmoil and likelyhood of leaving at the same stage?

Come on guys, this thread could be great, even for the people who think it's soccer

Here's an old thread about the World Cup draw I made that is less specific than this thread... If it was still around it probably would have had more talk due to it not pointing out just England.

So far I am at 50% of calling who advances. Nigeria and France let me down. France should have advanced but imploded at the end. That was a pretty pathetic showing by them. Very disappointing, French fans should be ashamed of their team.

Incidentally, have you seen this - http://www.arena.net/blog/world-cup-...anet#more-2389 ?

I should've guessed Herr Kerstein would have something to say on the subject

It seems that way though Germany is still in it. And so are the Netherlands and Denmark. Yup. At least they are as of now.

So. American teams are dominating thus far; a combined 10 wins, 0 losses, 3 draws...

Brazil should (hopefully) add another win today.

Ok, so I tried to watch a match. I think it was the Netherlands vs Cameroon. Anyhow, I tuned in right about the time the Netherlands scored a goal...so I stuck around for a while thinking/hoping something else might actually happen. To my dismay the only things that happened were some horrible injury acting and a bunch of running around and not scoring. I guess I am biased b/c I am American and I lost interest in soccer at the age of 12, but really what's the deal with the fake injury crap? Now I'm not saying all of our sports are all that great...as Baseball is painful to watch as is Nascar (on TV), but tbh I'd think I'd rather watch curling than soccer. It would be nice if there was more to the game than just running with the few a far between shots on goal. Allowing actual contact would be nice and maybe give more reason to fake a foul injury. When attending matches are fans allowed to drink in the stands? That might make a difference like it does for Nascar. But the game as is, shows little promise to keep the attention of most Americans after adolescence without something more than it is atm imo.

I'm pretty stoked.

Pity we didn't change to a more offensive shape in our last game but New Zealand is over the moon with how we did, for good reason.

Awesome.

I'm kinda surprised that both the finalists from the last world cup didn't even make it out of group play. Not as surprised that the US managed to win their group, but surprised nonetheless.

I managed to catch the Japan-Denmark game. Japan had two very good free kicks to take the lead and now we've got 2 teams from asia in the final 16.

Ok, first congrats to Ghana for moving on. Best team won today and I can't ask for anything more.

For the US team, with the exception of Donovan and one or two others, they suck. Their defense has about as much ability to contain the opponents in the first half (or the opening part of extra time) as Obama has the competence to contain the oil spill. I've seen trustier leaky sifts than the first half US defense. If they would stop getting surprised by the fact the game had started, they might have actually done well.

Now I've got to figure out if I'm going to keep watching and if I do, who to root for.

If I'm not mistaken, Ghana sent the USA packing last World Cup, too.

All along, the US defense has sucked first half but they managed to pull it out every 2nd half (usually in the closing minutes). Ghana's keeper did make some great saves today, though...

I corrected your post for you in bold.

On topic (oh the irony)... Ghana did deserve to win, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm mad. I cannot believe we were fielding players the way we were in overtime. 1st half performance was dismal, 2nd half was excellent, but then apparently, everyone decided to revert to stupid mode.

England's out after a poor match against Germany. I wonder if the match would've been different if they had validated Lampard's goal. I still see no excuse for not allowing the goal - it was clearly well inside the net.

Had the goal been given it might have helped give some momentum to England.
The first half hour alone was enough for England to lose though. They performed better at the start of the second half but couldn't make anything happen, so I'm not sure how much of a difference a second goal would have made.
